ABOUT US


Youth Shelter Care of North Central Iowa, Inc. (YSC) is a nonprofit corporation with a volunteer board of directors. The agency was founded in 1979 by a group of concerned citizens and has been at its current location since January of 1990. 


The Mission of Youth Shelter Care of North Central Iowa, Inc. is:

"Youth Shelter Care of North Central Iowa, Inc. provides safety for youth and is a community resource for the development of healthier youth and families through a diversity of services."

Who we are

Youth Shelter Care of NCI offers licensed emergency and temporary shelter for children aged 0-18 in Iowa. Our facility can accommodate up to 20 youth, operating around the clock to provide a safe haven.

Emergency and Temporary Shelter

Youth Shelter Care provides a secure environment for children aged 0-18 in Iowa. Our facility is licensed to care for up to 20 youth.

Youth Shelter Care also provides Child Welfare Emergency Services –Temporary Informal Shelter Care Services to youth and their families in our six county area (Humboldt, Hamilton, Wright, Calhoun, Pocahontas, Webster).  This service is available to children and families on a 24/7 basis and assists families with resolving an immediate crisis situation in order to keep children safely within their own homes.  This service is offered through our shelter CWES contract and referrals come from the Department of Human Services, Juvenile Court Services and Law Enforcement Agencies.  Our collaboration ensures comprehensive support and protection for vulnerable individuals.

Family-Centric Support Services: Therapy and BHIS


Our philosophy emphasizes the importance of family unity. We work diligently to maintain family and community connections, ensuring each child's well-being.


We offer tailored services to address current client needs, aiming to support children who have experienced traumatic events necessitating out-of-home placement.


YSC is also a Chapter 24 Licensed Community Mental Health provider.  YSC is currently providing Individual and Family Therapy, Behavioral Health Intervention Services and Children’s Mental Health In-Home Therapy .


Services to the youth and families at the shelter and within our community.  Families meet with their therapist at the shelter site or in the clients’ home (CMHW).  The family counselor provides in-home family counseling services to youth and their families that are experiencing problems.  A skill-building component (BHIS) helps the youth and families learn new ways to work together. The counseling emphasizes empowering them to make positive changes. These services are funded through third party insurance, Iowa Medicaid or private payment.


Department of Human Services and Juvenile Court Services

Youth Shelter Care provides emergency and temporary shelter care to children ages 0-18 and is licensed to serve 20 youth.  Referrals for placement currently come from the Department of Human Services, Juvenile Court Services, and Law Enforcement agencies.  Referrals are accepted on a 24-hour basis.  The youth that enter our shelter have all experienced traumatic events in their young lives and have life experiences that have brought them to the need for out of home placement.  We are able to provide them with an environment that is safe, secure, and accepting.  We assist the youth in maintaining family and community ties whenever possible.  We also strive to locate and coordinate services that will meet their current needs.
